Baby, It's Hot Outside!
I'm working on increasing my mileage for...obvious reasons. The first time I left, I was maybe hitting 3 miles at a go. I was working full time up to 2 weeks before my departure date so I had very little time to train. Working plus everything I did to get ready to leave my house. I figured that I would condition as I walked. Others have done the same, I figured I'd just follow in their footsteps. Well, not only do I have the time now but, as mentioned in previous posts, that's not a good plan. I'm doing nearly everything I possibly can to re-step my own way, my own path, my own walk. So now I walk nearly everyday, Jack and I, and we are increasing our distance and our stamina.
For some unknown reason (unknown to me anyhow), some days are just so much darn harder than others. Yesterday was the day from hell. It was a difficult walk. Even after the walk was done it stayed difficult the entire afternoon. I really began to wonder how in the world I could possibly make it across the street let alone across the country. When I got home I collapsed, my feet and knees (especially my feet) screaming in pain. They hurt all afternoon, after I iced them, took Advil and stayed off of them. I was completely miserable.
So I talked to my daughter, who is, by the way, 8 1/2 mos pregnant with my second grandchild, and we concluded that I was not fueling my body properly. We talked about the importance of electrolytes and I'm going to look for a pre-owned ;-) camelbak to carry water and drop electrolytes into that. And maybe carrying some high quality snacks with me.
Today I began with a 1/2 bottle of Naked Juice (I'm not a breakfast person at all so that's the best I can do right now). I stopped and got a bottle of Gatorade and H2O at a 7-11 at about the 3.5 mile mark and just as I hit the 5.5 mile mark I stopped at a health food store here in Winter Garden and got a Mean Green Smoothie with hemp. I felt GREAT afterwards and all afternoon. I have been able to think, which is the first thing that seems to go when I am not fueling my body properly.
The heat is a killer as well. Our Florida summers are unbearable so I must be pro-active for both Jack and myself. She was loving the gatorade, by the way :-)
Speaking of my adorable mongrel, she has discovered jumping over my fence. True, it is not a tall fence, just a cute and short little white picket fence but still, I was not anticipating that. This new little trick magnifies the vigilence/stress. Can't be losing my little buddy!
Luckily, I'm lively enough today to be able to think and realize that this walk will certainly test my physical capabilities to the limit. I always kinda knew it but it is becoming oh so much clearer. My friend, Justin Lee Brown, who is currently walking, is nursing a very bad ankle injury. Please keep her in your thoughts. You can find her on facebook under her name.
