The Unknown World

I'm sitting at the end of the long dock that reaches into Lake Apopka, very near my home. This special place is becoming my home office. When my eyes look up from the notebook on which I'm writing, I see ripples on the water, low-slung clouds smeared across the sky and water birds of all varieties soar and call to each other.

When I write at the house and I glance up, rather than seeing the water, the sky or wildlife, I see dishes to wash, clothes to hang out on the line, papers to file. These visuals are not awe-inspiring. The lake is the embodiment of serene peace. My crazy mind, in an instant, stills.

This lake is literally teeming with alligators and I'm sitting on a dock stretched out into the water. I'm sure there is a gator or two lurking beneath me. I'm perfectly safe, of course. The surface of the lake is calm, broken by small ripples produced by a rare and delightfully cooling breeze. Yet an entire ecosystem churns beneath me, unseen in the brown, tanic water.

As I gaze across the water to the far side, I see a couple of itty bitty boats. They are not truly itty bitty, the distance makes them appear so. Without a good pair of binoculars, I am unable to determine anything about the boats or the people who are enjoying this glorious day. I can wonder, I can guess. But I don't really know.

This is actually exactly how life is, how it unfolds. I cannot see far into the distance. In fact, I cannot see more than where my feet are at any moment. I can certainly experience the discomfort of sitting in my dentist's chair or enjoy the exquisite beauty of a rose, right then and there. But when it comes to the future - I'm clueless.

I have to rely completely on the One who does know. I have to wait for Guidance for my path to be illuminated, only one light at a time is all that is revealed to me.

This doesn't mean I don't plan for things, or look toward the future but attaching to the outcome is pointless. Each of us has encountered the unforeseen, the unexpected that changes our lives completely. Humans want to know what is coming next. We think we can plan it. Orchestrate it. Control it.

We can't. We are pretty much powerless.

I don't know about you but my crystal ball is broken. My binoculars got chewed up by Jack the dog.

Yet everyday is new. It's a surprise. It's an exciting journey.

We may as well embrace it with joy, with happiness, and especially with acceptance.
