"Holy Moley - I'm Getting Old!"
"Don't let age be the undertaker of your dreams"
LLLogan
I'm aging. Of course, so are you. From the moment we emerge from our mother's womb, aging commences. It goes un-noticed for decades until one day we look in the mirror and say, "holy moley, I'm getting old!" We say it like we had no idea it was happening. Kind of like a surprise party...without the party.
From the time I celebrated my 50th birthday (which my children hilariously (to them) informed me was a half of a century) to this present day, I've been quietly observing older people - meaning people older than me. I've been taking my own private survey to determine who just sits around waiting till death takes them and who flies in the face of the numbers and continues out running most of their peers and many people years younger. I want to be one of them. I believe that 'want to' attitude is a real positive start.
A few years ago, I worked at the Department of Motor Vehicles and I had the frequent opportunity to come face to face with some very old people. Being a student of people, I was open and friendly and therefore able to ask some pertinent (to me) questions. Like what did they believe was the secret to their longevity. I found it shocking that NOT ONE PERSON ever said "eating healthy" was the key. Now I am a fan of healthy eating - mostly - but isn't that wild? They said things like:
- keeping busy
- having friends
- going to church and praying for others
- continuing to work at something
- refusing to ACT old
Some of the older folks spoke of pursuing dreams now that had been put on hold in order to care for their young families. I was amazed at the number of "old people" who went back to school, many in the medical field. Seriously, they were in their 70's and 80's. And amazingly, they had no concerns about whether they would find a job or not when the finished.
And these go-getters, these vibrant folks don't give up on romance either. A friend of mine has a 91 yr old mother who has a boyfriend! She lives in an apartment and the boyfriend lives in the same complex. Both of them still live independently and see each other frequently!
So as I plan my next adventure, I refuse to acknowledge any particular number. I'm following in the footsteps of the many who precede me who also forge forward regardless of their age!
Here's my 13 yr old pup, Rhapsody. Though completely grey, nothing slows her down.
Here's a gnarly old bottle brush tree. Still beautiful after all these years.
(Will I wrinkle that much? YIKES!)
Cracked pavement but even though cracked, new and vibrant life shines through!
Let's not give up just because we are a little cracked. ;-)
