Hurricane Matthew, My Roof and Job

Living in central Florida is frequently quite an adventure. We have 90-degree temps while the rest of the country still has snow. The semi-tropics seem like a great place to garden, yet the heat and insects often make the growing season a challenge. Still, the Sunshine State is just that, most of the time, and after 31 years, I relish that sun.

Along with living on this peninsula comes the threat of violent weather. Today is the day after one of these major weather events called Hurricane Matthew and while central Florida was not vastly impacted, certainly some areas of our state, particularly the coastal cities, were most definitely hit. A friend lives about 30 miles from world famous Daytona Beach and she has been without power since yesterday morning. I, fortunately, was not so ill fated.

My greatest concern, as I awaited the impact of this storm, was my roof. It is about 18 years old and has recently been failing. Leaks here and there have been a bother and I’ve needed to call my adult sons to help do several partial tear-offs and repairs. Still, not long ago, an undetected leak occurred and soaked the insulation. The weight of this insulation caused the ceiling to cave in. I’ve tried several remedies, not having the resources currently to replace the roof though this is the most needed remedy. Two days prior to the arrival of the hurricane and in anticipation of it, I climbed on the roof with a gallon container of this black rubberized tarry nasty-ass stuff and shoved it into every spot that looked suspicious. Then I covered the entire shebang with a couple tarps…again.

So the rains came hard and heavy and though I did get about 2 tablespoons of water in my bucket which means I still have a problem somewhere, the roof stayed intact and no other leaks have become apparent.

Below are some pics and then hopefully a link to a video talk I did concerning my roof and Job. Yes...the same Job that is in the Bible.
