Springtime dreams
Spring, verging on summer, is upon us in central Florida. Many of my readers may live in regions of the world where spring is still a long way away. But here, it is beauty upon beauty every day. In fact, in another month or so, air conditioners will be a constant background noise, drowning out birdsong and crickets but for now, many of us have flung open our windows, luxuriating in all nature is offering us.
Our vegetable gardens are well underway with cabbage, broccoli, radishes and lettuce ready to enjoy. We lovingly tend to tomatoes, peppers, squash and eggplant because by the time July has arrived, the heat will have decimated most of our veggies.
And the bugs. (I'm an organic farmer, so...sometimes the bugs win)
My bird feeders are a favorite hang-out for birds and squirrels alike. And Jack.
Nearby I can HEAR a piliated woodpecker working on a dead tree and though I've spotted a couple, I have been unable to capture an image. I am so fascinated by these huge birds so it's always a treat to see one.
The owls are a special treasure to me. I am often awakened in the middle of the night by their hoots. I lie perfectly still (as though I might startle them from beneath the covers of my bed) hoping to hear their calls. But JACK, in protective mode, I guess, barks loudly and fiercely (from her bed on the floor next to me) and they fly soundlessly away.
Now is the time in central Florida, when everyone is working in their yards, pruning and fertilizing, planting and mulching. I am so blessed to have such a great yard and I love it when everything bursts into bloom.
Spring is always a blessing, abundant with new possibilities, new opportunities, new dreams to catch hold of.
I'm dreaming new dreams.
How about you?
Tabebuia tree - the brilliant yellow flowers burst open and hang on the tree for only a day or two and then fall dramatically to the ground. If you blink you might miss this spectacular sight.
